How can i get light brown highlights in my dark brown to black hair with out going to the salon?

i want to get light brown highlights with out going to the salon. my hair color is dark brown to black. i wanted to use sun in but i heard that it's not good. what do you guys recommend??How can i get light brown highlights in my dark brown to black hair with out going to the salon?
It depends entirely on what color is already on your hair. If there is NO color on your hair you may be able to do it with a light ash color, but you may have to do a bleach and tone.
